The organizers of the Southern Shamaal wanted to take the event back to its roots with original and unique sponsors which is why Zulu Blonde jumped in. The guys were pretty surprised when one thousand litres or 1.5 tonnes of beer descended on Port Elizabeth (The Start) in nothing other than a horse box! On registration all the paddlers picked up their boat numbers, t-shirts, stickers and goodie bags but were very weary of drinking a free pint of Zulu Blonde Beer – Zululand’s Finest. It took a bit of convincing before the well chizzeled and well trained athletes decided to have a pint but I think it was merely to calm the nerves. One by one they came back to the ice cold keg of beer after noticing that even Hank the Tank McGregor was even sipping on the golden foam headed amber liquid. It was after day one was over that the gents decided to chill out under the shadow of the Zulu Blonde advertising banner and get stuck into the beer. The race days would finish at around lunch time and the paddlers would grab a deck chair and join the Zulu Blonde crew under a tree and assist in getting through the twenty odd 50L kegs. As the race progressed the paddlers and supporters all managed to flatten all the beer supply with glee. The race was a roaring success and we were happy to be a party of such a grueling sporting event. Good luck next year fellas!
