The Brewery is on site at The George Hotel in Eshowe where its beers are available on tap at The Happy George Bar. The brewery is the smallest on the KZN Brew Route. All of our natural ingredients are from South Africa and abroad creating a perfect recipe of barley, wheat and hops to create the right taste and aroma we want from our hand crafted beers. Our brewery is capable of producing a maximum of 3000 L (800 Gallon) a month in batches of 300 litres (80 Gallons). Because our brew house is so small we brew up to four times in a day just to fill two 150 L (40 Gallon) fermentation tanks!
Due to popular demand and the fact that our brewery is so small our flagship beer Zulublonde is brewed under licience to the orginal recipe by the Nottingham Road Brewery in the KZN Midlands. We have had a long relationship with Notties as we bought their original brewery from them when they expanded in 1999.
The Zululand Brewery's flagship beer Zulu Blonde has recently been launched internationally where owner and brewmaster Richards Chennells brewed Zulu Blonde Export Ale at Marstons Brewery in Burton-upon-Trent in the UK to supply 800 pubs for the JDWetherspoons International REAL ALE FESTIVAL. Out of 50 different ales Zulu Blonde was voted number 1 and sold out in the first week of the three week festival. The Zululand brewmaster was invited back to the UK but this time brewed another 120 000 pints of the golden nectar at Everards brewery in Leicester to supply the 800 odd pub chain in time for the World Cup Kick off. The Zululand Brewing Co was established in Eshowe, Zululand by Graham and Richard Chennells. Graham has studied the Zulu culture and is actively involved in community and uplifment projects. He has been mayor of Eshowe, is a Rotarian, businessman, brewmaster, paratrooper, farmer and retired sportsman. Richard has visited breweries all over the world including Sierra Nevada USA, Young’s UK, XXXX Castlemaine AUS, Otter Creek, James Squires, Fullers, Meantime Brewing and many, many more. He has worked extensively in the tourism industry for SA and did a brew masters course through The American Brewers Guild in 2005. Richard worked in the UK for The London Stock Exchange, Barclays Capital and finished in 2005 at Bank of America.
The company is based in Eshowe, Zululand where Zulu Blonde was orginally brewed. The company now has contract brewing operations in South Africa (Nottingham Road Brewery) and the UK (Everards) and will shortly have operations in the Czech Republic and Belgium.
