In 2008 twenty cyclists rode from Zululand to Cape Town over 2 weeks covering over 1500km and raising over R1 million for charity.
Brewmaster Richard prepares the 1500km ride with a cold pint of Zulu Blonde.
Please note that this ride still happens once a year in February so if you would like to join in please email richard@eshowe.com
OBJECT: The ride is a fundraiser. Our goal is to raise a minimum of R1 million.
HOW: The Rotary Club of Empangeni, who have a number of participating cyclists in the Cape Argus Tour, has identified an opportunity to raise funds for local charities in the Empangeni area as well as creating an awareness of the Rotary ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise.
The Connection Ride has been identified as an opportunity to link Rotary Clubs en-route to Cape Town and to support inter-district ties and fundraising efforts.
WHO: A team of riders and support members, mainly Rotarians from the Empangeni Rotary Club, will embark on this 1,700 kilometre ride starting in Empangeni and finishing in Cape Town in time to participate in the Cape Argus Cycle Tour.
ROUTE: The cyclists will climb out of KwaZulu-Natal via Vryheid. The route will then pass through, among others, Ladysmith, Clarens, Middelburg, Aliwal-North, Graaf-Reinet, Oudtshoorn, Worcester, Paarl and finally into Cape Town.
BENEFICIARIES OF THIS PROJECT: Our Club has identified these worthy recipients in the Greater Empangeni area.
• Thuthukani Special School
• Zululand Hospice
• MusweNkosi Foster Home
The funds will be used for the social upliftment of communities and the care and support of HIV / AIDS victims.
WHY “CONNECT” WITH ROTARY?
Rotary is a worldwide organisation of Business and professional leaders that provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations and help build goodwill and peace in the world. Approximately 1,2 million Rotarians belong to more than 32,200 Rotary Clubs located in 167 countries. Rotary is also registered as a Public Benefit Organisation.
WHY IS THE “CONNECTION” DIFFERENT?
What sets Rotary International apart from other Service organisations is the jewel in the Rotary Crown - “The Rotary Foundation” is the heartbeat of Rotary, a non-profit organisation that supports the efforts of Rotary Clubs to achieve world understanding and peace throughout humanitarian, educational and cultural programmes throughout the world.
MATCHING GRANT!
Through Matching Grants the Rotary Foundation matches contributions raised by Rotary Clubs and Districts for International Service projects involving Rotary Clubs or Districts in two or more countries.
The Rotary Club of Empangeni will partner with one or more Rotary Clubs and Districts. The money raised will be supported and added to by future donations from the Districts concerned and finally the total funds raised will be matched in US Dollars by the Rotary Foundation in the form of a Matching Grant. Only in Rotary International is this possible.
BENEFACTOR BENEFITS:
The Rotary Club of Empangeni believes that the uniqueness of this project will assist your company in promoting social benefit programmes within the Zululand community via:
• Coverage in local and national newspapers
• Story of the event communicated to the 35,000 Argus riders
• Company logos to be worn by participants and displayed on support vehicles
• Can be part of your company's CSI (Corporate Social Investment) Strategy
The Rotary Club of Empangeni would like you to consider the contribution of funds for the very worthy causes we have identified above. Rotarians have very high standards of integrity and therefore you can be assured that any donations will be professionally managed and allocated to the recipients nominated.
AN EXCERPT FROM THE SPEECH OF WILLIAM GATES Senior AT THE CONVENTION
“All the money in the world doesn't matter if it isn't spent the right way.” Gates said. “Rotary gives people a way to convert their resources into results for the people who need them most...
...You are an army of activists who place Service Above Self.”
